How to Recycle Electronics Beyond Your Phone: TVs, Computers & More

Recycling a TV, computer, or printer in Rockland County takes one stop, and this guide shows you where to go, when to go, and what to bring.

October 22, 2026

If a new TV, laptop, or printer is on someone’s holiday wish list, the old one needs a plan, too. New York State doesn’t allow many electronics in the trash, and a closet full of old gadgets isn’t much of a plan either.

The good news is that electronics recycling in Rockland County is simple. Residents can bring TVs, computers, monitors, printers, and other e-waste to our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility in Pomona, or take them to participating retailers. We already covered how to recycle cell phones, so this guide is about everything else in the pile.

Why E-Waste Can’t Go in the Trash

New York’s Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act requires manufacturers to give most consumers an easy, no-cost way to recycle their old electronics. Since January 2015, New York has barred covered electronics (including TVs, computers, monitors, and printers) from the trash, curbside pickup, and landfills. Read the details on our page about the NYS e-waste law.

Today, you have two options for electronics recycling: our HHW Facility or a participating retailer. Call participating retailers ahead of time to confirm they’ll take your item. Check out the Department of Environmental Conservation’s recycling page for more details.

What Electronics Can You Recycle in Rockland County?

Our 2026 HHW Guide names these as accepted electronics:

  • Computers and monitors
  • TVs
  • Printers, scanners, fax machines, and copy machines
  • Inkjet and laser printer cartridges
  • VCRs, CD players, and radios
  • Telephones, cell phones, and pagers
  • Non-THC e-cigarettes

Throughout New York, other acceptable electronics may include tablets, e-readers, digital video recorders, cable and satellite boxes, and video game consoles. If your item isn’t something we bulleted above, call the HHW at (845) 364-2444 before you load the car.

Cords, Cables and Chargers

State law treats a cord or cable that comes with covered equipment as part of that equipment. Loose cords and chargers are different. Call (845) 364-2444 to find out whether to bring them.

What the HHW Facility Can’t Take

A few things trip people up:

  • CDs and VCR tapes. The VCR is fine. The tapes aren’t.
  • Large appliances, including washers, dryers, dishwashers, and large refrigerators and freezers.
  • Microwaves, toaster ovens, and air fryers.

On the other hand, small appliances that contain freon are accepted: air conditioners, small refrigerators, water coolers, dehumidifiers, and humidifiers.

Don’t Forget the Batteries

Many electronics use rechargeable batteries, and they need extra care. Lithium-ion batteries that end up in the wrong place can catch fire, explode, or leak harmful chemicals, so keep all batteries out of household garbage and recycling bins.

Cover the terminals with non-conductive tape, carry the batteries in a plastic or cardboard container, and bring them to the HHW Facility or a participating retailer.

Your Electronics Recycling Game Plan

Mark the weekend dates. In addition to weekday drop-offs, our HHW Facility offers weekend drop-offs on Sunday, October 18; Saturday, November 14; and Sunday, December 6, all from 8 am to 1 pm. The full list is on the 2026 schedule.

Clear your data first. Back up what you want to keep, sign out of your accounts, and erase personal information from computers and other devices before you drop them off.

Pack the trunk and pull up to the HHW Facility. Stay in your car, and trained staff will unload your items for you.

Rockland County by the Numbers

Residents are already good at this. In 2025, 24,496 residents used the HHW Facility and recycled 541,623 pounds of electronics (more than 270 tons!). That included 150,952 pounds of flat-screen TVs, 139,920 pounds of small electronics, 84,936 pounds of computer peripherals, and 55,303 pounds of computers and laptops.
