Rockland Green's backyard composting programs make it easy for homeowners to reduce waste, build healthier gardens, and save on disposal costs. We process yard waste from participating municipalities, transforming leaves, grass clippings, and food scraps into nutrient‑rich compost.

Step-by-Step Backyard Composting

It’s easier than you think!

Get a Compost Bin at Cost

Through a partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension, Rockland Green offers compost bins at cost. These bins:

  • Are ideal for managing food scraps and yard trimmings
  • Help residents divert food waste and reduce landfill use
  • Make backyard composting easy for any household

What to Compost

To compost at home, collect:

  • “Greens” like fruit peels, coffee grounds, and veggie scraps
  • “Browns” like dry leaves, paper towels, and shredded cardboard

Turn the pile occasionally and let nature do the rest.

Free Compost and Mulch Pickup

Residents can pick up free compost and mulch at designated sites such as Germonds Park in Clarkstown from April through October — just bring your own shovel and container.
